Session II: Offering Constructive Feedback - Wednesday, October 7, 2009, 3:00-4:30pm

CELT offered a two part workshop on how to conduct peer observation of and offer constructive feedback on teaching. As part of this workshop, we provided the opportunity for participants to practice the process of observing a class and offering feedback with a colleague. All faculty were welcome to participate and to invite a colleague with whom they would like to partner. For those who wished, CELT staff helped you to identify an appropriate colleague to work with you. For more information or to register, please contact Annie Soisson at CELT: annie.soisson@tufts.edu (617) 627-4000. We look forward to seeing you there!

CELT was pleased to co-sponsor the summer 2007 Graduate Institute for Teaching, providing graduate students with an opportunity to enhance their teaching skills. At Tufts we strive for excellence in teaching, mentoring and scholarship, and the mission of the Graduate Institute for Teaching (GIFT) is to support graduate students and faculty in these activities. Our goal is to provide opportunities for graduate students, our future faculty, to build strong teaching and communication skills.

GIFT works in collaboration with the University-wide Center for the Enhancement of Teaching and Learning (CELT) and is generously supported by the Graduate School of Arts & Sciences and the Tufts Summer School.

This two hour interactive workshop was held for the Tufts Arts and Sciences and Engineering faculty. It included: a review of Tufts' new academic integrity policy; designing effective assignments to prevent plagiarism; a hands-on demonstration of Turnitin, an anti-plagiarism program that checks student work against a database of student papers and published articles; a hands-on demonstration of RefWorks, a bibliographic management program that allows users to save citations and print correctly formatted bibliographies. RefWorks greatly reduces unintentional occurrences of plagiarism. This program was sponsored by Tisch Library, the Academic Resources Center, and CELT.

Workshop curriculum was tailored to the Tufts environment, including case studies of actual Tufts classroom experiences. This program was sponsored by the Office of Diversity Education & Development and CELT.

Comment from previous participant:
"These were two extremely valuable days – the best workshop I’ve attended at Tufts. Insights into my own resistance to discussion, possibly heated, about real issues, and realities for students. Insights into students’ behaviors and reactions. Practical ideas for how to make my classroom a good space for all students. A new network of colleagues that I respect and can turn to for ideas and support."
